Chapter 17
Light from Xodeâs glowing stone brightened the workroom and made Thyst around Saebryne twinkle. The Thyst seemed to be everywhere, on chairs, workbenches, and even dangling on delicate chains from the ceiling. Tools, most very similar to that which hung in her sisterâs shop, lined the walls. There were many that Saebryne had never seen and she suspected Celeste would be jealous of this place.
The scent of ancient wood, unused metal, earth, and musty air reached her like an overload to her senses. The stench, however, lured Goose further inside.
âWow.â He stood in the center of the large room and turned in a circle. His mouth gaped as he took it all in. "It's like being deep in the mines, the newer tunnels where the support beams have just been put in."
âItâs a magesmithâs shop.â Xode paced slowly around the room, lighting the walls as he went. âCan you believe it? This is where you can practice your craft.â
âNo.â Saebryne headed back for the door. She turned and watched Xode moving around the workshop and the light glinting off all the metal and Thyst. The white-blue light flowed over the wooden workbenches as if soothing her to come back and sit for a while. Yet she couldnât. It felt wrong to have broken in. âThis isnât my shop. I canât be here.â
âSaebryne, we canât stay at the inn forever. I need to be getting back to my sales. Iâve stayed away too long. If you could just make a few items for me to sell, it would support you and Goose here.â
âYou want me to magesmith items? Itâll put both me and Goose into too much trouble. You donât understand what exposure that will give us, and weâll be in this one spot. What if they see us here?â
âWho? Are you still scared of the royal guards?â Goose asked.
She paused. âNo. We havenât seen any of them since coming to Haleswood.â Why did she feel the need to lie to Xode and Goose? Probably because she hadnât been entirely truthful with them when sheâd explained the situation before. She didnât want any questions, especially those that would reveal that the prince had a Stonebreaker.
Xode dashed over to her and grabbed her shoulder. âNo, youâre afraid. What happened?â
âNothing. I just donât feel right being here. Someone has to own this shop. Come on. Letâs leave.â
Saebryne turned to leave, but Goose spoke, his voice containing a mild panic, âUm, thereâs light cominâ from under the door.â
She followed the silhouette of Gooseâs pointing finger toward the door on the other side of the room. In the gap between the bottom of the door and the floor, the shadow of feet moved in the lit room beyond.
âI told you someone owns this place,â Saebryne hissed at Xode.
âThereâs no other doors on this building,â he said.
Sheâd seen the condition of the Thyst on the slab covering the door. It hadnât been removed in ages. âThen how can someone be in here?â she asked.
âExactly!â
A sharp knock sounded at the door.
